Trail of Tears. Jackson had long wanted to force Native Americans off of the prized land in the east and onto the land west of the Mississippi River. When the state of Georgia decided to forcibly remove the Cherokees living within its borders, Jackson ignored the Supreme Court ruling that individual states did not have that right.
