Philip II of Spain was a proponent of the Roman Catholic Church, which didn’t mix well with the Protestant Queen Elizabeth I of England. The Spanish Armada was defeated, thanks to Sir Francis Drake and Charles Howard and some fireships. The Anglo-Spanish War ended with the Treaty of London – essentially a return to the status quo.
