Viola Liuzzo Park in Detroit honors Liuzzo for this distinction.

In 1843 and again in 1847, this poet who later became a hymnwriter, recited some of her poetry before a joint session of Congress.

In the 1960s, Peter Buxton of the U.S. Public Health Service found out about the Tuskegee Syphilis Study the Health Service was conducting where hundreds of African-American men infected with syphilis were treated with placebos. He was able to end the “study” which had begun in 1932 by doing this.
