Ohio. Daniel Emmett wrote the tune in 1859 in New York as a minstrel song. It was played at the inauguration of Confederate President Jefferson Davis in 1861 and soon became a favorite marching song of the Southern armies. Emmett, a Union man, regretted writing the song.
